Development of functional materials for microphysiological systems

In recent years, society has been transitioning into a super-aging society, making age-related diseases and declining quality of life major challenges. Additionally, the impact of environmental stress caused by climate change on physiological functions cannot be ignored. Against this backdrop, it is essential to integrate data from different scales and apply a comprehensive analytical approach to deepen our hierarchical understanding of life systems. Therefore, we propose a symposium co-hosted by two Grant-in-Aid for Transformative Research Areas (B) that aim to develop new interdisciplinary technologies and apply them to elucidate the mechanisms of central aging and lifespan control (particularly in the central system and plants), as well as the mechanisms of heat production, heat response, and physiological dysfunction (particularly in muscles). This symposium will incorporate multi-scale approaches from cells to organisms and trans-scale approaches from atoms to organisms. Through the introduction of the latest research results by researchers across various fields, we will discuss the importance of these approaches in understanding the hierarchical nature of life systems across time and space scales.
