Changes in the mode of inheritance of mutant mitochondrial DNA with aging

As the aging society and various environmental stresses become intricately intertwined, the human pathology and diseases also become increasingly complex. With a primary focus on extending healthy lifespan, research and drug development targeting individual cellular functions, particularly mitochondria, are actively progressing worldwide. Mitochondria not only play a crucial role in cellular energy production and metabolism but also possess a diverse range of functions such as repairing cell membranes and cytoskeletons, and maintaining redox homeostasis. The respiratory function of mitochondria is dually regulated by proteins derived from both mitochondrial and nuclear genomes. Observing the morphology and understanding the functions of mitochondria, along with developing genome manipulation techniques, provide avenues for creating robust cells and tissues. This symposium introduces cutting-edge research findings and technologies by leading researchers advancing studies on observing, reading, and creating mitochondria. While deepening our understanding of mitochondria, discussions on the potential medical applications are also desired.
