Effects of smoking on cerebro-cardiovascular diseases and cognitive function in patients with type 2 diabetes and/or obesity in light of monocyte/microglial function

Nicotinic receptors are widely distributed in the peripheral and central nervous system and dynamically regulate not only the peripheral immune system and gut microbiota, but also the central nervous system and glial cell function. The association of smoking with psychiatric and lifestyle-related diseases in epidemiological studies has led to numerous findings on the involvement of nicotinic receptors in these pathological conditions, which have attracted much attention for the development of nicotinic receptor-targeted therapeutics. At this joint congress, we propose a symposium composed of anatomists, physiologists and pharmacologists who are investigating the regulation of physiological functions via peripheral-central linkages, the pathophysiology of lifestyle-related diseases and psychiatric disorders, and the development of therapeutic agents focusing on nicotinic receptors. This symposium proposes the ‘Nicotinic receptor-mediated peripheral-central linkages, particularly in pathophysiological elucidation and therapeutic strategies for psychiatric and lifestyle-related diseases".
