Pharmacological research to overcome drug addiction

Psychiatric and neurological disorders significantly impact both individual lives and society. Despite their prevalence, the reduction in patient numbers and the establishment of fundamental treatments remain unachieved. Addressing this challenge necessitates the creation of a cohesive research framework that both deciphers the molecular underpinnings and the operational principles of the brain in these diseases, thereby connecting basic research discoveries directly to clinical practices. Since FY2021, the AMED has spearheaded the Brain/MINDS Health and Diseases Project. For almost four years, this initiative has supported a broad spectrum of basic and clinical research endeavors, from uncovering the mechanisms behind psychiatric and neurological diseases to applying these findings in practical settings. This effort has fostered the development of a dynamic research ecosystem, enhancing collaboration across these studies. Consequently, it has illuminated the hierarchical and longitudinal pathophysiology of psychiatric and neurological disorders, spanning from molecular aspects to synapses, neural circuits, and beyond to brain-periphery interplay. This advancement opens up new avenues for diagnosing and treating these conditions based on their pathophysiology. In this symposium, we aim to present the cutting-edge findings from the AMED Brain/MINDS Health and Diseases Project and discuss the interdisciplinary research necessary to overcome these disorders.
