The necessity of research using animals for scientific purposes is increasingly heightened in order to address and confront unsolved issues in biomedical sciences, such as pandemics, xenotransplantation, and the regulation of new treatments. On the other hand, it is crucial to remain conscious of the importance of animal welfare, social acceptance, and information sharing. It has been nearly 19 years since the establishment of the "2006 framework for animal experimentation," supported by laws, guidelines, and other regulations. This system is characterized by promoting animal experimentation under "institutional management." Through these 19 years, the necessary framework has been established, accepted widely and disseminated. Through analysis of the current situation, considering what has been achieved and what challenges remain, we will discuss the future of animal experimentation and the supporting system in Japan from different standpoints.
