In recent years, several new drugs have been researched and developed for the treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD), including topical agents, oral agents and biological agents. With the introduction of drugs with novel mechanisms of action, the pathophysiology of AD has been elucidated and the effects of each drug based on its mechanism of action have been investigated. In particular, clinical and non-clinical studies using new drugs have been demonstrated to clarify the mechanism of impairment of skin barrier function and pruritus. This symposium will review the mechanisms of action of topical agents used as basic treatments for AD. In addition, the pathophysiology of AD and the current state of treatment based on actual clinical practice will be explained from the perspectives of dermatology and pediatrics. Furthermore, recent non-clinical studies and pharmacology of therapeutic agents for AD will be presented.
