The relationship between spatial design and user experience lies at the core of understanding how planetariums function as immersive media environments. To ground this perspective empirically, the presentation introduces a typology of planetariums based on the analysis of datasets from 164 domes within the GDP and GLPA communities. Using statistical methods, these domes were categorized into several distinct types of planetariums, revealing structural patterns across the field. The resulting typology serves as an objective mapping of the planetarium landscape, enabling a more differentiated understanding of the medium for both research and practice. Drawing on design theory and the concept of habitus, the second part of the presentation emphasizes the importance of spatial design and examines how theater layouts actively shape the perception of the medium. It argues that it is both conceptually meaningful and practically productive to speak of at least two distinct dome-based media forms that, while sharing the same technology, operate according to their own media logics. Recognizing these distinctions provides new clarity for collaboration, content development, and future design strategies within the planetarium community – especially as certain types risk becoming increasingly rare.
