This review paper explores the current state and future prospects of superconducting electric machines for aviation systems incorporating on-board cryocoolers on the rotor without involving any cryogenic fluid coupling. With a focus on eliminating complex and inefficient fluid coupling systems, avoiding unreliable rotary seals, and minimizing power consumption, we analyze the challenges of integrating cryocoolers into rotating systems and summarize recent advancements in thermal management. Significant milestones are achieved and presented specifically for various high-temperature superconductor (HTS) motors that are integrated with on-board Stirling or pulse tube cryocoolers. The paper also highlights emerging trends and technological needs for superconducting propulsion especially in aviation industry. These milestones underscore the progress in integrating cryocoolers with HTS motors, paving the way for more compact and efficient superconducting rotating systems in various applications.
