Owing to its exceptionally high irreversibility field, elevated transition temperature, and outstanding critical-current density, REBCO coated conductor has transitioned from laboratory curiosity to large-scale commercial reality. The material now underpins numerous power-cable and magnet initiatives worldwide, and its strategic importance has been amplified by the surging demand from the compact-fusion sector. Responding to this inflection point, Shanghai Superconductor Technology Co., Ltd. (SST) has launched a comprehensive capacity expansion founded on fully in-house design and manufacture of key process tools—magnetron sputtering (MS), ion-beam-assisted deposition (IBAD), pulsed-laser deposition (PLD), precision slitting, copper plating, lamination, and associated post-processing systems. This investment is explicitly targeted at driving down unit cost while simultaneously enhancing tape performance, thereby ensuring a stable supply of premium-grade conductors for downstream partners. By December 2024, SST’s annual output had reached 2,000 km (12 mm equivalent), with a clear roadmap to 4,000 km by 2025. In parallel, SST is executing an aggressive R&D program focused on application-specific customization and reliability. Current thrust areas include laser slitting, stainless-steel reinforcement, dielectric insulation, ultra-low-resistance joints, real-time thickness metrology, and automated coil-winding technologies. Collectively, these efforts equip customers with turnkey solutions that de-risk deployment and accelerate project success. This paper reports SST’s latest industrialization milestones and technical advances.
