Impurities in copper are removed mainly by oxidation during molten metal treatment, producing CuO in the melt. Phosphorus is then added to reduce the dissolved oxygen concentration. To evaluate the oxidizing ability of the slag, we investigated the phase equilibria and measured the CuO activity in the CuO–Al₂O₃–P₂O₅ ternary system.
