Hydrogen has a potential to become a viable energy source that can satisfy global energy demands in the future. One of the key elements to implement hydrogen energy in the energy system is providing a safe, affordable and accessible method of hydrogen storage. In this study, a numerical analysis is preformed to evaluate geomechanical and chemical stability for underground hydrogen storage considering the efficiency of cushion gas. The study aims to analyse the geomechanical behaviour of the reservoir to access its long-term storage capacity and develop methods while minimizing environmental impacts and safety risks during injection and production activities in depleted oil fields.
