Conversion of monosaccharides such as glucose (C6), xylose (C5), and glyceraldehyde (C3) to aromatic compounds was performed over a supported platinum catalyst in high-temperature water to investigate the impacts of monosaccharide type and reaction conditions on the yields of aromatic compounds. In addition, to investigate the reaction pathways from monosaccharides to aromatic compounds, we also reacted various monosaccharide derivatives such as furan compounds, keto acids, and sugar alcohols. We report the findings on the formation of aromatic compounds from these studies.
