The chemoselective hydrogenation of unsaturated aldehydes has been intensively studied. Particularly, complete suppression of subsequent hydrogenation remains a challenging task, and catalyst development is ongoing to achieve this. In order to selectively hydrogenate only the formyl group of unsaturated aldehydes, it is important that the oxygen atom of the carbonyl group is preferentially adsorbed onto catalyst. In this study, we attempted to achieve this type of adsorption by utilizing the high oxygen affinity of titanium suboxide Ti2O3, and to hydrogenate cinnamaldehyde using a Ti2O3-supported platinum catalyst. We investigated the effects of not only the support effect, but also the catalyst preparation method and Pt loading amount on the catalyst performance.
