In this study, we developed a catalyst in which the active metal Pd is encapsulated in a high-entropy oxide (HEO) consisting of five or more constituent elements. This catalyst suppresses the aggregation of Pd even at 600°C in a hydrogen atmosphere, and furthermore, it exhibits higher activity in the synthesis of formic acid by hydrogenation of carbon dioxide than a conventional Pd-impregnated catalyst. It also exhibits higher activity than a catalyst in which Pd is similarly encapsulated in an oxide of a single constituent element, which is attributed to high-entropy effect.
