I has been giving on-site classes to the younger generation, to deepen their understanding of the oil exploration and production industry. Mercury present in crude oil and natural gas and the response to it were treated as important topics for future engineers, technical college/university students. In particular, the mercury trouble at Okinawa in 2001 and the domestic petroleum industry's response to it were also useful for the later response to the Minamata Convention. We would like to discuss the students' knowledge of mercury and Minamata disease and their reactions after the lecture.
