The phenomenon of loosening in bolted joint used in machines and plants is observed as a decrease in axial tension (clamping force), whether caused by depression or fluctuations in external force applied to the bolt. A strong linear relationship between the behavior of axial tension and the passage of time can be obtained on both logarithmic coordinates. The results of an investigation into methods for evaluating the remaining lifetime of bolted joint based on this relationship are described.
