The direct conversion of methane, the main component of natural gas, into value-added chemicals is attracting attention as an innovative alternative to conventional syngas-based processes. In this study, we found that ethane and ethylene are efficiently formed under high-pressure conditions using Na2WO4/SiO2 as both an initiator and a catalyst for methane oxidation. Comparative studies using various catalysts and reaction conditions revealed that the reaction proceeds cooperatively both in the gas-phase and on the catalyst surface, and that the exothermic reaction on the surface plays a crucial role in enhancing the selectivity toward ethane and ethylene.
