In petrochemical plants, trables of gas leaks caused by loosening of bolted joints have been reported. The loosening of bolted joints is observed as a decrease in clamping force, which is likely caused by either a depression-type phenomenon or fluctuations in external forces acting on the bolts. A strong linear relationship between the behavior of clamping force and elapsed time is obtained on logarithmic coordinates. This paper presents the results of a study on a method for predicting the remaining clamping force and evaluating the remaining loosening lifetime of bolted joints based on this relationship.
