Conversion of syngas into methyl acetate was studied over the tandem-type catalyst consisting of Cu-based catalyst and mordenite zeolite. In this reaction, syngas is converted into methyl acetate via methanol and DME. When mordenite without adding metal ions was used, the main product was DME and the methyl acetate selectivity was low at 2%. However, ion-exchange of mordenite zeolite with Cu ions promoted the CO insertion reaction and increased the selectivity of methyl acetate by more than 30 times. Cu-exchanged mordenite was characterized by various techniques, and the structure and role of Cu promoter were discussed.
