This paper describes a successful case study in which a vacuum gas oil hydrodesulfurization unit maintained continuous operation following the shutdown of its fractionator feed heater. Rather than pursuing equipment restoration, a process modification strategy was adopted. Through reconfiguration of the fractionation scheme and minimal equipment modifications, operability, product quality, and corrosion management were successfully maintained, enabling an early unit restart and sustained crude oil throughput.
