Pyrolysis is a fundamental initial process common to thermochemical conversions that transform biomass into syngas, chemical products (such as aromatics), and carbonaceous materials (such as coke). In this presentation, we discuss the reaction principles and reaction engineering approaches that are necessary and effective for maximizing material and energy efficiency while diversifying products through the integration of pyrolysis with downstream processes. Furthermore, we present the design concepts and demonstration results of production systems based on these approaches.
