We discovered that a core–shell structure consisting of a metallic Fe core and an FeCr2O4 shell is spontaneously formed from an FeCrOx oxide precursor under reducing conditions. The resulting FeCr2O4 shell effectively suppresses the sintering of Fe particles while exerting little influence on the electronic state of the Fe surface, thereby contributing to enhanced ammonia synthesis activity. As a result, the FeCr catalyst exhibited superior performance compared with conventional industrial iron catalysts. Furthermore, the addition of a small amount of K further improved the catalytic activity, resulting in an ammonia synthesis rate more than twice that of conventional industrial iron catalysts. Notably, ammonia formation was also observed at 100 °C, highlighting the potential of this catalyst for low-temperature ammonia synthesis.
