Ni and Al containing mesoporous silica catalysts were synthesized to elucidate the active Ni species responsible for the ethylene-to-propylene (ETP) reaction. Acidity was introduced by Al incorporation, while different metal incorporation methods were employed to control the state of Ni species. The catalysts were characterized by various analytical techniques and evaluated in the ETP reaction. The relationship between the nature of Ni species and catalytic performance was investigated, and the Ni species contributing to the ETP reaction were identified.
