A motor velocity vibration increase had been repeatedly occurring in the double-shaft vertical motor for the air preheater. Since conventional vibration diagnostics could not identify the root cause, a motor current multiplex analysis system was introduced. The analysis revealed that thermal expansion of the air preheater body, caused by an increase in exhaust gas temperature, led to misalignment and eccentric loading between the electric motor and the backup air motor. This resulted in bracket wear and bearing creep.Based on these findings, a modification plan to disconnect the air motor was developed, and equipment improvements were implemented.
