Hydrocarbon (HC) traps are one of the technologies used for automotive exhaust gas purification and require effective adsorption of unburned hydrocarbons at low temperatures. Large-pore zeolites are promising HC trap materials because of their ability to adsorb aromatic hydrocarbons; however, their durability remains an issue. In this study, mordenite (MOR), which is expected to exhibit superior durability, was investigated. The effect of K cation addition during synthesis on the distribution of ion-exchange sites was evaluated using toluene adsorption properties. Toluene adsorption was carried out at 353 K, followed by purging and temperature-programmed desorption up to 873 K at a heating rate of 15 K/min.
