硫酸担持触媒は優れた酸触媒として知られているが、表面構造・組成の不均質性から触媒活性構造の解明は困難である。最近、我々は硫酸イオンとニオビウムイオンの周期配列で構成されるさまざまな結晶性硫酸化ニオブ複合酸化物の合成に成功している。これらの触媒では硫酸イオンの状態や配列により酸機能が大きく変化することが分かった。発表ではこれらの結晶構造を基に、硫酸イオン周りの局所構造と酸触媒機能の関係について、その詳細を述べる。
