In the synthesis of acrylic acid derivatives via CO2 insertion into ethylene, we have previously found that carbon-supported Au–Ni alloy catalysts exhibit high acrylic acid yields. In this study, NiO,
Au/NiO, and Au/LaNiOx catalysts were prepared and evaluated after hydrogen reduction. The acrylic acid yield followed the order of Au/LaNiOx > Au/NiO > NiO. These results suggest that enhanced catalytic activity is attributable to the lower reduction temperature of Ni species induced by Au addition and the increased basicity resulting from La incorporation into the support.
