Metal oxide clusters composed of group V metals such as Nb and Ta are active for proton abstraction and CO2 activation because of their base catalysis. It is known that the synthesis of cyclic carbonates by CO2 insertion into terminal alkynes are catalyzed by Ag cations in the presence of base. In this study, we found that Ag cation salts of basic metal oxide cluster anions exhibit high yields in the synthesis of cyclic carbonates by CO2 insertion into propargylic alcohols in the presence of homogeneous metal oxide clusters as external bases, at room temperature and atmospheric pressure.
