In order to reduce the volume of waste plastic sent for incineration, a new technology to utilize it as aggregate for asphalt pavements has been developed. Due to factors such as surface smoothness, it has been difficult to use plastic materials in conventional asphalt pavements. This problem was resolved by developing an asphalt binder that suppresses the flow of the aggregate through the addition of resin under appropriate conditions. Furthermore, trial paving was carried out on public parking spaces to confirm the practical durability. It has been estimated that this technology reduces CO2 emissions by approximately 40 per cent compared to conventional paving.
