Plastic modulation of central pain circuits involving reward and stress systems in nociplastic pain

The term -nociplastic pain- proposed by the International Association for the Study of Pain in 2017 as the third category of chronic pain distinct from nociceptive and neuropathic pain, was officially translated into Japanese in 2021. This category includes conditions such as fibromyalgia, complex regional pain syndrome, and irritable bowel syndrome, which are characterized by complex neuroplastic mechanisms involving central sensitization. The persistence and multidimensional nature of nociplastic pain are influenced by the interaction of genetic, physiological, and psychosocial factors. This symposium will present recent advances in clinical, basic, and translational research on nociplastic pain, in order to promote cross-disciplinary understanding of its pathophysiology and to discuss future directions for the development of effective treatment strategies
