Mammals produce <em>cyclo </em>octasulfur to suppress ferroptosis

Life has evolved and developed along with efficient energy acquisition using bio-essential elements (oxygen (O), sulfur (S), and selenium (Se)) belonging to group 16 elements (chalcogens), which have excellent electron transfer capabilities. Although attention has focused only on the redox properties of each chalcogen, it has been revealed that O, S, and Se, together with bio-essential metals, form linear or cyclic super-complex molecules (bio-chalcogenides) in greater numbers than expected in living organisms, and that bio- chalcogenides exhibit active functions that cannot be explained by the individual elements. This symposium will present the latest findings on the unique functions of bio-chalcogenides and their potential in medical applications.
