helix,tissue engineering

There are no straight lines in biological tissue. At the molecular level, there is the double helix of DNA and the α-helices of proteins; at the micrometer level, the triple helix of collagen and the helical orientation of cells; and at the millimeter level, the helical structures of blood vessels, skeletal muscle, and cardiac muscle. Why do living organisms prefer helices? In particular, the reasons for micro- and millimeter-scale helical tissues are not clear. We hope to understand the mysteries of helical structures in living tissues and apply them to helical tissue engineering.
