Colloidal synthesis may result in the discovery of nanocrystals possessing crystalline structures utterly distinct from their bulk forms or even non-existence in bulk forms. Here we demonstrate the synthesis of new colloidal nanocrystals based on an iron-chalcogenide compound. Instead of forming nanocrystals with a spherical shape, the nanoplatelet-like structure of FexSy is obtained. These nanoplatelets have a crystalline structure that has never been observed in any other iron-chalcogenide compounds. Besides their unique properties, potential applications of these nanoplatelets for light energy harvesting and energy storage will be discussed.
