[20a-A201-5]Si Photonics Low-Loss Grating Coupler for VCSEL

We propose a high efficiency Silicon photonics grating coupler for VCSEL. Coupling using diffraction gratings cause large coupling loss due to light emission that occurs symmetrically toward the upper and the lower directions of the waveguide. We propose a grating coupler that combines through holes and half-etched gratings which can be fabricated using standard Si photonics foundry service. The structure was optimized using the CMA-ES algorithm and an averaged coupling efficiency of 79.6% was calculated in the C band.
