In this paper, we report for the first time, supercontinuum generation using a Nd:YVO4/Cr:YAG microchip laser whose temperature is varied to control the output pulse characteristics.
As the Nd:YVO4 crystal temperature is increased from is from 25℃to 55℃, the microchip laser output pulse energy increases from 4.3 μJ to 7.4 μJ, and the pulse width reduces from 2.1 ns to 1.48 ns. Consequently, the peak power increases from 2 kW to 5 kW.
The output of the Nd:YVO4/Cr:YAG microchip laser is coupled to a 3-m long PCF to generate a broadband supercontinuum. The generated supercontinuum spectrum width increases from 509 nm at 25℃ to 827 nm at 55℃, confirming the increase in microchip laser output peak power as the Nd:YVO4 crystal temperature is increased.
The results shown here will be very useful for the design of compact supercontinuum sources.
