Mid-infrared wavelengths are attractive for optical fiber communication, sensing, and quantum computing. Since germanium shows great potential in MIR photonics for its wide transparent wavelengths and superior optical-electrical properties, we have investigated a Ge-on-insulator platform which enables ultracompact Ge-based MIR photonic integrated circuits. In this work, we demonstrated a Ge microring resonator avalanche photodiode at a 2 mm wavelength utilizing defect-medicated absorption.
