A multi-plane light conversion (MPLC) represents a multi-input/multi-output (MIMO) mode conversion realized by repeated free-space propagation and wavefront transformation with phase plates. The demonstrated MPLCs act on scalar modes and cannot directly manipulate the Jones vector (i.e., polarization). In this paper, we propose a Jones-vector MPLC using birefringent metasurfaces instead of phase plates and present an optimization design method for the metasurfaces using an adjoint method. In addition, we demonstrate our MPLC through simulation.
