We have constructed and characterized an asymmetric resonator and prepared an atomic ensemble for efficient single-photon readout from quantum memories. We report on the evaluation of two types of custom-made mirrors with transmittances of T₁=1000 ppm and T₂=10 ppm, as well as the characterization of an asymmetric resonator combining these mirrors. We also report on the initialization of the internal state of the atomic ensemble.
