Gold nanoparticles modified with carboxylic acid-terminated alkanethiols having different numbers (n) of -(CH2)- units in the alkyl chain, were developed for dimer and multimer formation with uniform and have controlled inter-particle gap distances in liquid. The formation of the dimers was attempted by changing the dispersing solvent in the fabrication process from sodium chloride to hydrochloric acid, and the binding modes at the interparticle gap were compared by SERS characterization. Optimized process for making gap-controlled dimers on the angstrom scale was performed.
