We found that a single-layer hBN coating of LaB6 lowers the work function: PEEM revealed that the hBN-coated region has a lower work function than the uncoated and graphene-coated regions. hBN-coated regions have a work function that is 0.4 eV lower than the uncoated region. Density functional theory calculations support this result, and the addition of the oxide film improves the agreement between the calculated and experimental results. Synchrotron X-ray photoemission spectroscopy confirmed the presence of an oxide layer in LaB6.
