Organic thin film heterostructures are important in multilayer devices such as solar cells. Epitaxial growth, in which crystalline thin films are oriented with respect to the underlying layer, is one of the key strategies for controlling the structure of organic heterostructures. Our group has reported that large grains of N,N'-Di-n-octyl-3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic Diimide (PTCDI-C8) with a size of more than 100 µm were formed by crystallization via a liquid crystal phase during the vacuum deposition. In this study, we investigated the growth morphology and epitaxy of organic heterostructures of copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) thin films grown on the giant grains of PTCDI-C8 underlayer.
