Reduction of CO2 emissions is an urgent issue for prevention of global warming. Recently, ammonia is expected as a carbon-free fuel which does not emit CO2 during combustion. However, the industrial Haber-Bosch process has serious problems including requirement of high-temperature and high-pressure reaction conditions for ammonia synthesis from dinitrogen and dihydrogen. We have developed metal cluster catalysts as novel catalyst materials, which have been studied for catalytic ammonia synthesis under milder conditions. In this presentation, we will report this study from viewpoints of creation of new function and contribution to global environment through development of novel materials.
