In nature, temperature, redox, pressure, and concentration gradients are created by the activity of Earth. In living systems, electrical, ionic, and chemical gradients are interconverted by membrane proteins. In this talk, I will report on the highly ordered inorganic membranes found in deep-sea alkaline hydrothermal vents, and their potential for chemiosmotic energy generation realized by selective ion transport.
