Insect elytra showed liquid crystallinity from the observation of optical microscopy. Maltese crosses, which are found in synthetic liquid crystal molecules, were observed. Depending on the type of insects, the Maltese cross were oriented or randomly existed. Synchrotron XRD measurements revealed the existence of various periodic higher ordered structures.
