Plasma, the fourth state of matter, is composed of positively and negatively charged particles and is an electrically neutral system in which the positively and/or negatively charged particles are in random thermal motion. Particles within the plasma collide with each other resulting in the formation of excited atomic/molecular particles, chemically active particles, and photons. These characteristics can be used as electrical, chemical, and optical stimulations controlling cells’ activities in plasma-bio researches. However, it has been unclear which stimulation is dominant or combination of those stimulations is necessary for controlling cells’ activity. In this study, we developed microdevices called Plasma-on-Chip which enable direct or indirect plasma exposure of cultured cells. Comparing results of direct and indirect plasma exposures, which stimulation is effective for controlling cells’ activity.
