We quantified the kinetics of hydrogen and ammonia release during the hydrothermal decomposition of ammonia borane (AB). Subsequently, we estimated the activation energy of this dehydrogenation reaction. The calculated value of the activation energy was reasonable when compared with that of the catalytic hydrolysis of AB. Furthermore, we demonstrated power generation using a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) fueled by hydrogen derived from AB, which also contained ammonia and moisture. The I-V characteristics observed using the AB-derived hydrogen exhibited comparable or better performance than pure hydrogen, and no degradation was observed during a short-term evaluation period.
