Surface-normal optical modulators, which can be arrayed in two dimensions, are expected to be applied to massively parallel optical communications and other applications. One-dimensional plasmonic grating modulators with electro-optic polymer have been demonstrated, but their applications have been limited due to their polarization dependence. In contrast, a polarization-independent optical modulator based on two-dimensional dimerized plasmonic gratings was devised and its effectiveness was demonstrated by numerical analysis. This polarization-independent, surface-normal, high-speed optical modulator is expected to have a wide range of applications.
