In order to understand the mechanism of changes in optical response due to phase transition of MnTe, we performed ab-initio calculations of alpha- and beta-MnTe crystals. The calculated results of imaginary part of optical refractive index indicated that the rise of optical absorption shifted approximately 1 eV to the higher energy side due to the phase transition from alpha to beta. This is because the nearest neighbor distance between Mn atom and Te atom is shorter in the beta phase, and the interactions between these two atoms become larger, resulting in an increased band gap and a larger optical transition energy.
