Stretchable electronics using rigid, high-performance surface mount devices (SMDs) and stretchable wiring exhibit high electric performance. However, the electrically connected area between an SMD and stretchable wiring breaks due to the difference in the tensile stiffness when the device is stretched. We proposed to use gallium-based liquid metal as an electrical interface material (EIM) and study its effect on the device properties. As a result, we found that the liquid metal not only has the advantage of stretchability itself but also that the stretch tolerance of the wiring can be enhanced by the liquid metal as an EIM. Finally, we demonstrated the stretchable LED display which can be stretched more than 150%.
