Because CH4 has a strong greenhouse effect, developing a sensor to monitor CH4 concentrations is necessary. Here, IrO2 has attracted attention as a sensor material. It has been reported that the surface of IrO2 can strongly adsorb methane, causing the symmetrical structure of methane to distort, thereby promoting the C-H cleavage of methane. In this study, we calculated the adsorption and reaction energies of methane on the IrO2(110) surface and changed the surface properties of the IrO2(110) surface by controlling the annealing conditions. Our goal is to try to use the resistivity change during the reaction of IrO2 surface with CH4 to develop a sensor with high sensitivity to methane in the air.
